What is GMTFOO?

GMTFOO is a data-driven country-matching tool built for Americans seriously thinking about leaving. It is not a travel blog, a sponsored ranking, or a list of the same ten countries everyone else publishes. It is a quiz — 14 questions — that matches you to your actual best country based on your budget, work situation, visa needs, healthcare priorities, climate, language tolerance, and values.

How the scoring works

Every country is scored 0–100 across 13 dimensions. Scores are indexed against a global baseline of all 152 countries — so a score of 52 means exactly average, not mediocre. Scores above 70 are genuinely strong. Scores below 30 are genuine weak points worth understanding before you move.

Political Stability
Cost of Living
English Proficiency
Job Market
Remote Work
Family Friendliness
Visa Accessibility
Healthcare
Safety
LGBTQ+ Rights
Trans Rights
Women's Rights
Inclusiveness

Your quiz answers determine which dimensions are weighted most heavily in your match. A remote worker prioritizing healthcare gets a different ranking than a retiree prioritizing affordability — even if the underlying country scores are identical.

Where the data comes from

All scores are sourced from public, peer-reviewed, or internationally recognized datasets. No sponsored placements. No affiliate relationships with immigration services. The full methodology is documented on the data sources page.

Why we built this

Most "best countries for Americans" content is based on what's popular, what's sponsored, or what the writer personally experienced. GMTFOO is based on data. The premise is simple: the best country for you depends entirely on you — your income, your family situation, your values, your risk tolerance. A retired couple in their 60s and a 28-year-old remote software engineer should not be getting the same list.

The quiz has been completed over 9,000 times by US users since launch. 57% of Americans who take it cite political climate as their primary reason to consider leaving. 37% cite healthcare. That data shapes how we weight scores, how we write the guides, and which countries we prioritize covering in depth.
